Medical gaslighting: The women not listened to or viewed as overdramatising or catastrophising

Olive O’Connor knew in her gut that something wasn’t right with her new born baby, but no one would listen to her. Nurses said she was being over protective or mollycoddling.

“I was like, ‘hold on a second there’s definitely something wrong, I’m not mollycoddling – There’s something wrong with my baby’,” says Olive. “I kept being dismissed. My GP was on holiday, so I brought her down to A&E. Basically, they told me that I had post-natal depression and that the baby was fine, there was nothing wrong with her and to go home.”

Her daughter continued to lose weight and sleep excessively and when she started to go limp Olive paid a second visit to A&E. This time she demanded that her 12-day-old daughter be admitted for assessment. The hospital complied on condition that Olive agreed to be assessed herself. She says she would have consented to anything at this point, she was so terrified something awful was going to happen to her daughter.

That night a nurse asked Olive whether she had heard of Munchausen’s. She hadn’t. In fact, she responded by asking the nurse if that’s what her baby had been diagnosed with. She now knows that the inference in the question was that she was making up symptoms for attention.

Next morning, the doctor said her baby had a heart murmur. He sent mother and baby home saying there was nothing to worry about. But Olive didn’t go home, she went to her GP who was back from holiday. He listened to Olive’s concerns, assessed her baby and arranged for her to be seen at another hospital.

The doctor at this hospital told Olive and her husband that their baby had three holes in her heart and needed to go to Crumlin hospital for further investigation.

They drove to Crumlin only to have a cardiologist there tell them to take their baby back home as there was nothing to worry about. Distraught, Olive left the hospital. To this day she has no recollection of where she went. She just walked. While she was gone her husband asked for a second opinion. When she returned the second cardiologist told the couple that their daughter needed heart surgery and heart medication. She also needed special food and had to be tube fed because she had become so weak and lethargic.

Despite almost losing her child to medical gaslighting, Olive doesn’t believe that the health professionals who dismissed her did it intentionally. When the doctors and nurses failed to take her concerns seriously, they were likely acting on their implicit bias that mothers can be over protective and can become hysterical about their children’s health. When people, are stressed, overworked or tired, as many health professionals are, they are more likely to act in an unconscious biased way.

By dismissing Olive’s unease as irrational, the nurses and doctors missed valuable information about the baby’s wellbeing. What Olive described as a gut feeling, was likely a cumulation of her observations of her baby, her experience as a mother of three, as well as subtle warning signs that Olive herself may not even have registered consciously.

Medical gaslighting happens when health-care professionals downplay or explain away symptoms with non-medical or emotional reasons. This leads patients or parents to doubt themselves or think they are exaggerating. It can result in more and prolonged pain for the patient and may even put lives at risk. Medical gaslighting is more likely to be experienced by women than men.

Donna Nahal describes herself as a happy, energetic, but naive 16-year-old when she visited her GP. She says: “I made repeated visits over a 12-month period with the same complaint. My foot was dropping, and I was having multiple falls.”

Migraine is a debilitating neurological condition that is three times more common in women than men

She says that her GP responded by asking her whether everything was okay at home and was she worried about her studies.” At 17, Donna was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a neurological disease that affects three times more women than men.

Rachel Lynch says she was told “that my migraine was due to anxiety, that I was a lovely girl who was just a bit of a worrier and if I did a bit of CBT, I’d be grand.”

Migraine is a debilitating neurological condition that is three times more common in women than men. Dr Martin Rutledge, a neurologist who specialises in migraine says “many patients will say that the doctors and medical professionals believe that they are exaggerating their symptoms, or they are making up some of their symptoms”. He explains that the problem is that you can’t measure migraine, there is nothing that you can objectively say is wrong with the patients, because you can’t measure anything.”

Women are more likely to experience chronic pain than men but less likely to receive treatment despite the fact that their pain is more severe, longer lasting and more likely to recur than pain in men. Even when women present with similar health problems to men, women are likely to receive a lower quality of care to men.

The Women’s Brain Project president Dr Annemarie Schumacher Dimeche.
The Women’s Brain Project president Dr Annemarie Schumacher Dimeche.

The Women’s Brain Project focuses on sex and gender determinants of health as a gateway to precision medicine. It’s president Dr Annemarie Schumacher Dimeche (University of Lucern) says that women experience pain differently to men due to anatomical, physiological, neuronal, hormonal, genetic and psychosocial factors. When men and women present with chest pain the men are 2.5 times more likely to be referred to a cardiologist. Cardiovascular disease affects women differently than men in terms of symptoms, risk factors and outcomes. Despite this, only a third of clinical trial participants are women. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in women, yet women are seven times more likely than men to be misdiagnosed and discharged while actively having a heart attack.

It’s highly unlikely that this is intentional. It’s far more likely to be a result of unconscious gender biases or stereotypical views by medical professionals or a failure to acknowledge the differences that exist between women and men.

Dr Marie Theresa Ferretti, neuroscientist, co-founder and CSO of the Women’s Brain Project, says the same symptoms that tend to be attributed to organic disease in men, are much more likely to be diagnosed as anxiety or panic attacks in women. Women with acute pain are less likely to get opioid drugs and more likely to receive sedatives. Dr Ferretti views the recognition of mental health issues in women as a positive, but she argues that it becomes problematic if doctors dismiss the original symptoms because the women may end up with an incorrect diagnosis or ongoing pain.

Despite presenting to her GP with hip pain for years, Tina, who has fibromyalgia, was never offered an x-ray

Keira says that the gaslighting that she experienced following surgery for breast cancer was more to do with pain than the cancer itself. She says: “My internal stitches had ripped but no one would believe me or believe that I was in pain. So it took 10 days for the mistake to be identified. I was treated as if I was drug seeking, over anxious or somehow a problem patient.”

Dr Cliona Loughnane, Women’s Health Coordinator at the National Women’s Council of Ireland, says that medical gaslighting comes up as an issue on their Women’s Health Programs. She says that unfortunately many women feel that they are not listened to or that they are viewed as overdramatising or catastrophising. She points to the history of healthcare scandals in Ireland and says: “it is notable how many of them have impacted on women and women’s health specifically – symphysiotomy, the Anti-D, and the cervical check.”

Despite presenting to her GP with hip pain for years, Tina, who has fibromyalgia, was never offered an x-ray. It was only when she reached a point of being unable to put any weight on her leg that she was finally sent for an x-ray, which revealed osteoarthritis. She is currently on the waiting list for a hip replacement, uses a wheelchair and can no longer walk unaided. She says; “In my experience doctors tend to put every ailment down to fibromyalgia. I am scared that in the future another serious condition will be missed.”

Dr Ui May Tan, GP and Health and Wellbeing Clinical Lead at the VHI, says that people presenting with chronic conditions are the most vulnerable to gaslighting. She explains: “If a patient gets diagnosed with a specific chronic condition that they don’t fully understand it’s likely that they’ll present more often to their GP who will be biased towards thinking that this new symptom is actually linked with the patient’s original diagnosis. So, the symptom can get brushed aside.”

Dr John Fitzsimons, Clinical Lead for Quality Improvement in the HSE, implements ongoing training of doctors with a specific focus on patient safety. He employs implicit bias testing to educate doctors about how beliefs and biases influence interactions with patients. He says doctors are shocked to discover their implicit biases. He believes that more awareness and research is needed about how unconscious beliefs and hidden biases influence health professional’s perceptions, judgements and actions.

Olive’s daughter is doing well and Olive is now actively involved with the RCSI and RCPI in educating health professionals about the importance of listening to parent’s concerns. Her personal experience led to her being part of a group of health professionals and parents, chaired by Dr John Fitzsimons, that changed the Irish Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) to include parental concern as a core parameter and important indicator of the level of illness of a child.

More Utah women are donating to Biden as Trump struggles with female voters

Men in Utah have thrown their financial weight behind former Vice President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump in almost equal measure during the 2020 presidential election cycle, campaign finance data show.

But a new analysis from The Salt Lake Tribune and the Center for Responsive Politics shows women in the reliably conservative state have donated far more money to the Democratic presidential nominee — who has raised $708,000 from female donors — than to Trump, who has brought in $429,000 from the group.

The campaign donations represent a significant shift in the importance of female voters in this presidential election and demonstrate that women are now “putting their money where their votes have been,” said Morgan Lyon Cotti, associate director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah.

“In the past, perhaps within a marriage or within a partnership, women were more likely to align with their husband or their boyfriend and so wherever those donations were going they were fine with,” she said. “But now with this gender gap, it’s more likely that a woman votes differently from her husband or boyfriend and she wants to donate her money in the way that’s in line with her beliefs and values.”

Men are still more likely to donate to political campaigns overall, Lyon Cotti said, but there’s been a “big increase” in the number of female donors over the past decade and particularly in this election.

The campaign finance analysis shows Trump has raised $1.1 million among male voters in the Beehive State. Biden has raised around $1 million, or 60% of his total donations, from men, while 40% of his itemized contributions come from women in Utah — a smaller gender gap than Trump’s at 27% support from women.

Contributions are itemized or disclosed, along with donors’ identifying information, to the Federal Election Commission once someone contributes more than $200 to a candidate.

The gender divide in campaign contributions seems to align with recent polling that shows men in Utah standing solidly behind the president while women are more evenly split between the two candidates. A Y2 Analytics poll released earlier this month showed that male voters favor Trump by 25 points and women favor Biden by 4 points.

Nationally, surveys show Biden is polling around 25 points better than Trump among women.

Jeff Merchant, chairman of the Utah Democratic Party, said he thinks those numbers and the campaign donation data in Utah reflect a fatigue among women with the Republican Party.

“You’re seeing a lot of women who are really kind of tired of what’s been going on,” he said. “And whether that’s involving equal pay or issues such as, geez I don’t know, making women have higher premiums simply because they’re a woman in the health care [arena], there’s just all sorts of issues women are taking far more seriously” and that may move them to the left.

There’s also a need to consider, Merchant said, what he calls “the clear misogyny of Donald Trump.”

At least 25 women have accused the president of sexual assault or nonconsensual physical contact, and Trump has a long history of attacking women based on their appearance and weight or comparing them to animals.

Just weeks before the 2016 presidential election, a video surfaced of Trump bragging to Billy Bush of “Access Hollywood” that he tries to sleep with married women and that he is forceful with those he finds attractive.

“I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait,” he said in the now infamous tape. “And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”

“Grab them by the p—sy,” he said. “You can do anything.”

Lyon Cotti said many people speculated in 2016 that the video was “going to turn off women voters and [they] were surprised that as many women voted for him as they did.”

Trump won a plurality of white women in 2016 and did particularly well among white women without college degrees. Black women, on the other hand, voted for Clinton in high numbers across all education levels.

But Lyon Cotti said women’s marches, the #MeToo movement and other social and political shifts over the last four years may have served to mobilize women to the left since then.

“We’ve seen a lot of both quantitative and qualitative data showing that he certainly hasn’t won over any more of those women and a lot of women who voted for him in 2016 do not plan on voting for him again,” she said.

Laurel Price, executive director of the Utah Republican Party, said she wasn’t surprised to see the gender divide in Utah’s campaign donations, noting that there’s “no question” polls have shown Trump is less popular among women.

“It’s not terribly surprising you would see the donations would follow that track a little bit,” she said.

But while she said she personally disagrees with some of the president’s comments on women, she noted that female voters will also be considering the economy, national security and the appointment of conservative Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett when they cast their ballots.

“I suspect that maybe some women will choose to support President Trump but they’re maybe not going to wear a MAGA hat while they’re doing it,” Price added. “They may be more quiet about that support.”

‘A lot more riding on this election’

Rosalyn Eves, a 43-year-old professor at Southern Utah University, has donated “at least twice” to Biden’s campaign this year, small contributions of about $25 at a time. But the amount belies their significance as her first time ever financially supporting a national campaign.

“Mostly I feel like there’s a lot more riding on this election than there has been in the past,” she said of her decision to throw financial support to Biden and other candidates.

Eves, an unaffiliated voter who said she tends to lean left, said another reason she chose to donate is because her plans to volunteer for the Democratic nominee were disrupted by the pandemic, teaching full time and child care.

“I don’t have the time, but I do have money,” she said. “Not that I’m rich, but I felt like I wanted to contribute.”

Eves noted that her support for Biden is rooted in her moral values as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She described Trump as “pretty sexist” and expressed vehement opposition to the administration’s policy of separating immigrant children from their families at the border.

“I take seriously the baptismal covenant to mourn with those that mourn and comfort those that stand in need of comfort,” she said. “I think I can’t vote just based on what politically conveniences me. I have to look at what policies benefit the most people and especially what policies help the marginalized. And I do not feel like Donald Trump cares about marginalized communities.”

Jody England Hansen, a 63-year-old Millcreek resident, said she’s given about $200 to the Biden campaign so far — a decision she said has also been influenced by her religious beliefs.

“My lifetime in the church informs everything I do, including this,” she said.

But while a number of Latter-day Saint women have mobilized this year to vote for Biden, Hansen said her views haven’t always been met with support from some members of her congregation.

“I have experienced people who attack me because they don’t think someone who’s Mormon should be voting the way I vote and I think that’s tremendously inappropriate,” she said.

The ruling First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has reiterated this election cycle that it is neutral on partisan matters and that principles compatible with its teachings are found in multiple political parties. Members can join any party and remain in good standing, the church has said.

But Rob Taber, national director of Latter-day Saints for Biden-Harris, said the group has been aware “from the beginning” that its message would largely resonate with women of the faith, who he said think about policies and the way they affect their families differently than men might.

The group’s Facebook statistics bear that out, with women making up about 70% of its audience on the social media platform, he said.

“Latter-day Saints also match national trends where women just in general are more likely to vote for the Democratic nominee and they’re also more likely to be repulsed by the president’s poor behavior and conduct and the poor example he sets,” Taber noted.

But while Utah’s campaign donations show greater financial support among women for Biden, that doesn’t mean Trump has lost support among the demographic altogether.

Anna Bates, who lives in Orem, made at least one of the 525 individual donations the president’s campaign has received from Utah women this year. She said she voted for Trump in 2016 because he’s a “creative man” and she was excited to see what he would do in office.

“He’s not trying to do what everybody else wants him to do,” she said.

Bates said she voted for the president again this year. And while she wouldn’t specify how much she donated to his campaign, she assured it was “plenty.”

“I’ve lived a long time, and it’s such an important time in our lives to get somebody that will get on, stay with their principle and follow them,” Bates said.

‘Getting into the ballot box’

Evidence of a gender divide in Utahns’ political donations exists not only on the presidential level but also in the state’s hotly contested 4th Congressional District race between Republican candidate Burgess Owens and the Democratic incumbent, Rep. Ben McAdams.

Campaign finance data show McAdams has raised over $1 million among women, or 35% of his donations, while Owens has brought in around $460,000, or 24%, from the group.

Owens’ campaign did not respond to a request for comment on the campaign finance numbers and McAdams’ team declined to comment.

Merchant, the chair of the Democratic Party, said he was “not surprised” to see a gender divide in donations in the race, a reality he said shows women in the suburban district are “interested in problem solving more than they are in partisanship.”

“And in Ben McAdams’ case, let’s be honest, that is a simple decision that these women have to make,” he said. “I mean, the reality is is that if you’re interested in a problem solver, yeah, Ben McAdams is talking policy and you have Burgess Owens who’s talking socialism. They’re really ships passing through the night in many ways.”

(Christopher Cherrington | The Salt Lake Tribune)

(Christopher Cherrington | The Salt Lake Tribune)

The race between Owens and McAdams is expected to be one of the most competitive in the country, and nearly $19 million has poured into the contest.

Hansen, a registered Republican who lives in the 4th Congressional District, said she’s among the Utah women who have opened their wallets — for her to the tune of around $120 — to help McAdams win reelection.

The Millcreek resident said she feels McAdams “really listens to people share their experiences and their concerns with him.” And she’s concerned the Republican candidate has shown “a propensity toward conspiracy theories” with his appearances on programs affiliated with QAnon, a baseless far-right fringe movement Owens has said he does not believe in.

While Owens has received less support among female donors than McAdams has, Price, the GOP executive director, said she thinks the campaign donations may not necessarily be indicative of the amount of support Owens has among women in Utah.

“I see a lot of enthusiasm from women for Burgess and what he stands for and believes in and the way he would represent women’s issues here in the state,” she said. “And so I think women particularly are really excited about Burgess. I’ve sort of witnessed that over the last year in my role as executive director as he has worked hard to get where he’s at.”

As Election Day draws nearer, Price said she’ll be watching to see how donation data and polling bear out for the candidates in both the 4th Congressional District and the presidential race.

“Donations definitely can be indicative of how people are going to vote,” she said. “But at the end of the day, it’s getting into the ballot box and actually voting” that will make the difference.

Poland’s Near-Total Ban On Abortion Sparks Women’s Strike

Poland's Near-Total Ban On Abortions Sparks Women's StrikePA Images

A women’s strike has launched in Poland, following a court’s near-total ban on abortion.

Many employers in the eastern European country are believed to have agreed to let female employees take the day off, in solidarity with the strike.

While it’s difficult to know just many women were involved in the strike, many gathered in the capital Warsaw today, October 28, chanting: ‘This is war!’

The crowds of mostly young women and some men can be seen holding signs which read slogans such as ‘nothing can stop an angry woman,’ and ‘get your hands off my daughter!’

It comes as protesters up and down the country march for the seventh day in a row, after Poland’s Constitutional Court ruled that abortion should be legal in cases of rape, incest or to protect the mother’s life – but not in cases of foetal defects.

Despite the Roman Catholic Church still having a big influence in Poland, an opinion poll by local paper Gazeta Wyborcza found that 59% of people disagree with the change, reports.

Protests Bring Poland To Standstill After Near-Total Ban On AbortionsPA Images

The ruling came on Thursday, October 21, following a legal challenge against a 1993 law permitting abortion in cases of severe foetal disabilities, which make up 98% of terminations carried out in Poland.

Currently there are around just 1,000 abortions taking place in Poland each year, however women’s rights groups have said there’s likely to be around 80,000 to 120,000 terminations taking place either illegally or in other countries to avoid the restrictions.

Despite the unrest which is evident all over the country, deputy prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski has described the protests as an attempt to ‘destroy’ Poland, while urging locals to ‘defend’ the Catholic Church.

PA Images

Meanwhile, the country’s foreign minister Pawel Jablonski says the ruling is in place to protect unborn babies foetuses from being ‘discriminated’ against because of health defects.

‘It’s a cruel thing to do, to kill unborn children on the basis of the fact that they may carry a Down’s syndrome… Should we discriminate against people with Down’s syndrome? These people have the exact same right as every other human being,’ he told BBC News.

A female protester in Warsaw said the government ‘forcing us to give birth to sick, deformed foetuses, causing such suffering to mothers and children’ is ‘barbarism taking Poland back to the middle ages.’

The protests show no sign of slowing down any time soon.

This Twitter Account Collects The Majority Of Cringe-Worthy Examples Of Men Writing About Women In Books (79 Pictures).

Making a character in a book seem realistic and intriguing is no easy task. It’s not down to just your skills as an author, though. You actually have to know a bit about who you’re blogging about. In other words– do your research. Unfortunately, there are some male writers out there who seem to have significant problems writing female characters and appear shy about asking their female friends for suggestions.

That’s where the ‘Men Write Ladies’ Twitter page comes in. It records the scariest and most cringe-worthy examples of males blogging about women without having any idea about them or their anatomy. Scroll down and check out for yourselves, dear Pandas, since some of these examples need to be seen to be thought– that’s how unreal they are. Keep in mind to upvote the best of the worst.

The project was drawn back in 2019 when Meghan Vondriska released her version of the ‘Male Composing Females’ Reddit neighborhood. Now, the ‘Male Compose Women’ Twitter page has 63k followers and there are 666 fans who follow their Instagram page. Very scary and perfect for Halloween. “Ladies just want to be written as human. That’s it. There isn’t some wild scientific formula to writing ladies, and it isn’t tough. Compose them as human, with intricate sensations, not as body parts that occur to be created into a feminine form,” Vondriska told Bored Panda.

I recognized with the Guy Writing Females subreddit, but created a Twitter account in order to craft a constant narrative and to construct a neighborhood that wasn’t hidden behind privacy,” Vondriska revealed what motivated her to create ‘Guy Write Females.’

Vondriska, from Wisconsin, feasts on 3 to 5 books every week. (On the other hand, our stacks of started-but-unfinished books continue growing.)

According to the creator of the ‘Guy Write Women’ Twitter page, a great deal of male writers who tend to be thought of as the “founders of the literary canon” are constant wrongdoers. “John Updike. The biggest repeat wrongdoer is definitely Stephen King. His representation of his female characters is truthfully offending,” Vondriska stated.

Whitmer: Trump’s ‘Cruel, Adolescent’ Attacks Are Putting Women Leaders In Danger

Citing her experience as the target of a violent kidnapping plot, which she’s alleged was encouraged by the Trump administration’s “dangerous” rhetoric, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer accused President Trump of putting political leaders, especially women, at serious risk in his pursuit of reelection.

President Trump has criticized Gretchen Whitmer for her handling of the coronavirus pandemic in … [+] Michigan.

Key Facts

“Every time the president ramps up this violent rhetoric, every time he fires up Twitter to launch another broadside against me, my family and I see a surge of vicious attacks sent our way,” the Democratic governor wrote in an op-ed published Tuesday in The Atlantic.

Whitmer said she was “not surprised” when, after the FBI announced it had foiled a months-long, multistate plot to kidnap and potentially kill her, Trump responded to a crowd at a campaign rally that chanted “lock her up” after he described Michigan’s Covid-19 restrictions as overly tight by saying: “lock them all up.”

Whitmer denounced this, and other “cruel, adolescent attacks on women like Senator Kamala Harris,” as well as public-health leaders, that she says puts “leaders, especially women leaders, at risk.”

Trump, behind in the polls in the final days of the election, has lashed out left and right with vicious attacks against Democratic politicians, the media and even top infectious diseases official Dr. Anthony Fauci, who the medical community and many senators strongly defended after Trump called him a “disaster” and weighed firing him earlier this month.

Fauci, 79, said he has started receiving death threats about his handling of the pandemic, and now has to power walk with a security detail.

Trump called Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) a “monster” after her October debate against Vice President Mike Pence, and has recently taunted multiple women as “crazy,” including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and NBC correspondent Savannah Guthrie, while using what some view as sexist language about “suburban housewives” during his rallies.

Crucial Quote

“Early on, before I realised it wasn’t politically correct, sorry folks, I haven’t been doing this too long, I said ‘the suburban housewife loves Trump,’” the president said during an October rally in North Carolina. “By the way, the women, they loved it … The only people that minded it? Those people there with the cameras.”

Key Background

Trump has put the spotlight on “suburban women” frequently at his rallies over the past few weeks, begging “please like me,” because the polls show Democratic presidential Joe Biden commanding a strong lead over this voting bloc. A recent poll from the New York Times and Siena College show Biden leading by 23 points among suburban women in swing states, while Pew Research found suburban women nationally prefer Biden by 19 points.

Trump Tells Suburban Women He’ll Get Husbands Back To Work

I understand it’s kind of beating a dead horse to say that Trump is out of touch with the common guy, however for genuine, was he cryogenically frozen 60 years back and still persuaded that there are women all over the residential areas scared of Black people and hoping their spouses can get back to work so they can keep ironing? Trump will get your other half a job so you can get back into the kitchen & make sandwiches. I do not need studies and data to inform me that women are getting the brief end of the stick when it comes to COVID profession adjustments– nearly every working mommy I’m friends with has had to change their work hours, cut back to part time, or stop completely(assuming they weren’t already laid off)in order to end up being a homeschool instructor to their kids.
